ACPT (Auditory Continuous Performance Test)

ACPT (Auditory Continuous
Performance Test)

Children with learning disabilities often appear to have difficulty paying attention in the classroom. These attention problems may be symptomatic of a number of etiologies including ADHD and central auditory processing disorders. The ACPT, (Auditory Continuous Performance Test), was developed to establish if the child's difficulty is related to deficits in attention or if the child has a central auditory processing disorder. The ACPT was normed on children 6 to 11 years of age, to assess the auditory attention abilities.

The ACPT consists of an auditory vigilance task in which the child listens to a list of words and raises a thumb every time he or she hears a target one syllable word. There are two types of errors that a child can make on ACPT: not responding to the one syllable word, or responding to a word other than the one being presented. The test is scored by counting the number of target words that were missed (errors of inattention) and the number of responses given when the target word was not presented (errors of impulsively). Results are compared to normative data acquired on children of the same age. Cut-off scores are provided to help in the determination of auditory attention deficits. As the case with all standardized assessments, a diagnosis of ADHD cannot be made based on the results of one test. The information obtained from the ACPT should also be evaluated in conjunction with teacher reports and direct observations of the child in the classroom.
